The very friendly Staines Amateur Regatta is held every July at the Silvery Sands, near Wheatsheaf Lane, Staines.

The race covers a distance of 500 meters downstream (from near the St Peter’s church.) Staines Boat Club members act as volunteers, running this popular event.

The first race was held in Victorian Staines in 1851 a year before Staines Boat Club was formed. Then, the Staines Club was based at the Swan Hotel in the Hythe Boathouse (according to Charles Dickens, Jr.)

A second Staines club — the Burway Rowing Club — was formed in  1920 (originally called the Staines Town Rowing Club  the name was changed  to avoid confusion with the older club.) In those days the members of the ‘Burway’ rowed from Tims boatyard which was opposite Church Island near the Lammas in Staines.  In 1935 Tims moved and so the club found a new home near the Anglers Rest, in Egham.

In 1946 the club moved again to their Laleham boathouse.
Their current HQ at Laleham Park has been in use since 1979.
