JFK — Album Launch Show

JFK (also known confusingly as JFK Blues] is a London /Surrey five piece band that has been playing their rock ‘n’ rolling blues — spiced with jazzy manouche touches — for about a year or so.

If John Etheridge met Ray Davies at Le QuecumBar and they discussed a rhythm and blues project — this is probably how it would have turned out…

The band is composed of some very experienced musicians — PAUL BLOUNT on keys who once lived in L.A. and worked with Jeff Beck, SOL EZRA on drums [an early member of Talk Talk] gypsy-rock guitarist IAGO BANET ; LES ‘LEO’ VICTOR on bass [he played with the Blockheads] and the youngest member of the outfit — lead vocalist/guitar CHRIS ELLIOTT who they found busking at Covent Garden Tube and invited along for the ride.

Paul Blount on keys – they bring blues, jazz, pop and boogie to the people…

We attended the “Rough Round The Edges” album launch show at the legendary 100 Club in London’s West End this week.

We enjoyed JFK’s beautifully crafted self-penned songs that began with “St Joseph” and had mellow, mid-tempo beats and instantly catchy melodies.

Chris Elliott’s poignant and cheery R&B voice on songs like “Shadowlands” reached clear trebles without too much difficulty — and this talent helped to take the sounds from blues origins and into pop-rock territory whilst still retaining the genre’s emotional content.

If we really had to designate their brand we would say the JFK sound is similar to that of the Alexis Korner band — in other words, they bring blues, jazz, pop and boogie to the people…

We’re not really a blues band…” Chris shouted to a passionate audience… directly before the band embarked on yet another raw-blues number — this one adorned with flinty peaks of guitar and a boogie underbelly.

We enjoyed the really excited rhythmic patterns and the cleverly woven guitar songs, such as “Having a Real Good Time.”

Often these songs had insistent backwoods blues-vibes that took us directly to those all-night parties down on 18th and Vine.

This was a poetic and vibrant show delivered by a pack of musicians who have clearly spent a lifetime entertaining their audiences.

Sticky End for Live Music in Staines?

Sticky End for Live Music in Staines?

Message from STICKY FUNGUS:

I guess by now that most of you (even those that have not yet visited The Club) have heard that Sticky Fungus has closed. That is correct. However…….

The club Had to close as we were informed that the Licensee had been objected to by the local Police and Licensing Authority and insufficient numbers through The Club made it un-viable. That was enough to cause a temporary closure.

Unfortunately, since we have been closed, The Club has been subject to a serious theft. Sound and Light equipment plus fixtures, fittings and Drink Stock with a total value in excess of £10,000.00 was stolen. Some has been returned but insufficient to immediately re-open. The Police are aware of who is responsible and when CID have finished with evidence and video images, those who carried out the theft, will be prosecuted….

ASFlogo

With the sudden closure of Sticky Fungus just four weeks after its faltering opening (and let’s not forget that the whole project was on/off on/off on/off more times than a professional stroboscopic light show at a Hawkwind concert in downtown  Vegas) together with the total collapse of the Phoenix as a venue, along with the complete dogs dinner at the Dog & Partridge (the latest owners apparently left in quite a hurry … without leaving a gig diary) and it would be easy to assume that the live music scene in Staines is looking shakier than Shakin’ Stevens standing on a lilo in the North Sea.

But that good ole musical equivalent of a soup-kitchen- The Hob (Hobgoblin, Staines) – is still going strong (thanks to the sheer dedication and hard work of those nice folks BUCKLE UP) every Sunday and Thursday (ACE & GRAVITY IS DEAD are on JUNE 7th entry £3) and don’t overlook the Staines Riverside Club.  Yes, yes, it may look like your nan’s front living room and have the same atmosphere as a fun-night in at a retirement home in Eastbourne, but they have hosted some magnificent acts there over the years … none more exciting than this week’s headliners – BRAINSCAPE – Friday 5th June entry £3…

And just a few stops down the line at Windsor & Eton riverside you have got the thriving Old Ticket Hall venue – almost on your doorstep. (Jun 12 2009 they host ALOUD OUT for all you Killers and  Kaiser Chiefs fans out there)… not to mention The Firestation Arts Centre a short walk down the hill from the riverside station (20th June sees Post War Years + MidiMidis + Vienna Ditto all in their Basement Studio entry £5.)

If you have the cash left, you could take a mini-cab to the ROYAL OAK HAMPTON ( Friday 12th June – Smileys Heros – or Saturday 13th June – Netherworld .) Or pop along to The Barley Mow, Shepperton – a really comfortable pub – who are hosting a classic rock night with local favourites BandX on Saturday 6th June.

We at ADPONTES really hope that Sticky’s can get up and running again (soon) and , if and when they do, we will support them as much as possible …. but in the meantime DON’T GIVE UP on STAINES ….

“Going to stand on that bridge
Keep my eyes down below
Whatever may come
And whatever may go
That rivers flowing
That rivers flowing”

w/ Lemonshaft

Even if our zeitgeist (spirit of this age) yokes us away from this inexplicable xenophobia and withdrawal from various prejudices; the undefined beauty of this theoretical Acousto alt.ectronika band is that they subsume delicicious sounds in their rarefied qualitative productions openly, but not nihilistically, as a motif (laconic or otherwise) kinetically determined judiciously inward – yet holistically grafted in a frantic effort towards a dynamic and a cosmically broadened anxiety.

Classic Rock Power Trio…  Live at Windsor

Riff Raff - Windsor

Riff Raff
Mar 27 2009
Old Ticket Hall
Windsor

Classic Rock is the best music on the planet.  Period.

RIFF RAFF show it due respect with a no-nonsense delivery that tells it like it is – straight ahead rock from the classic power trio format, superbly played. They pay tribute to (but don’t copy) some of the best known (and some less obvious) rock tunes. With former pro credentials and years of experience working throughout Europe and elsewhere, in diverse acts, RIFF RAFF really know what they are doing – telling the story of rock, from its sixties beginnings, through the “classic” glory years, and up to the nineties.

If you enjoy Led Zeppelin, Free, Wishbone Ash, Cream and their contemporaries, you’re going to love RIFF RAFF.

Melodic Indie Pop- Live in Staines

Audio Video Disco at Staines

Audio Video Disco
Mar 29 2009
Hobgoblin
Staines

Audio.Video.Disco. are a new breath of fresh air to the indie, pop genre, not afraid of writing catchy melodies and annoyingly difficult to pigeon-hole, they are a cut-above the norm.

Formed mid-way through 2007 when duo Matt O’Daly and Richard Berkshire moved away from their acoustic roots and decided to start a proper band. In stepped Adam Linton (bass) and Tom Smith (drums). The line-up was complete.

Now having already played alongside Alphabeat, a set at the illustrious Clapham Grand and a headline show at the Astoria 2, this band have already attracted the attention of producer/engineer Phil English. The band recorded their current EP at
Phil’s Alexander Sound Studio in Milton Keynes.

Their EP launch was a huge sell out success and the band sold more tickets than when Hard-Fi played the same venue. Now with a solid fan base built up over the past year the band are set to make some serious waves amongst the current crop of bands coming out of the West-London area.

Live and Fresh Rock & Metal – in Staines

Kamizake Test Pilots Staines

Kamikaze
Test Pilots
Mar 12 2009
Hobgoblin
Staines

With ABSTRACT GENIUS

KamikazeTest Pilots mostly come from a country called Zimbabwe which is why they have the funny accents, although they have been living in the UK for near on a decade, so the accents are funnier still.

Ryan (aka Beans) plucked up the courage to ask his grandfather, a 6 foot plus ex-cop, if he could have a set of ancient jazz drums to fulfill a dream thought up during the long and hot african summers. His request granted, he set off forming a band with his younger brother Wes. It was soon obvious that Wes had a natural gift for the drums, so Ryan picked up the guitar, learned a few chords and slowly progressed to writing songs. They took their “band” to the boarding school they went to and it was then they met Martin.

Martin started on 6 strings, learning the very few licks and chords that Beans knew and with a revolving door of bassists, a band was born. However, turmoil created within Zimbabwe forced all matters of music to be put aside and for us to take stock of what options were available to us. We decided that it was time to spread our wings.

Kamikaze Test Pilots was eventually formed in 2005 by Beans and Wes. There were a number of member changes, with Martin joining the band as bassist in January 2006. The last of the changes happened in January 2008 when the band were joined by Jim Davies (ex-Loki) on guitar. To date we have enjoyed local radio and internet radio airplay, have self released a six track EP (“Into The Sun”-BUY IT NOW!) and are constantly gigging some bar somewhere. . .

A New Band Rises at Staines

Five Foot Something at Staines

Five Foot Something
Feb 19 2009
Hobgoblin
Staines

Of all the chances?  The Goddess of music works in strange and mysterious ways- Tis True, Tis True…our favourite STAINES local guitar/vox hero Ravi K (Succotash etc. etc) bumped into his new neighbour – Robert Hart- they had never met before. Robert was carrying his guitar and amp to his car.

Their conversation went along similar lines to this; Ravi “Do you play guitar?” Robert “Does the pope wear a silly hat and a bear defecate in the woods?” Ravi “Me too re: the hat (and guitar)- though I don’t poo under the trees”. And thus, Five Foot Something were born.

Robert hauled in friend Warren who is a mean bassist and later Jamie heard what was going on and wanted ‘in’ too….This is their inauguration – so we want a big turn out at The Hob (but they have been rehearsing like crazy) the sound is kinda mixed up but there are funky vibes, punky roots and elements of just about every musical style that washes over these local boys. But, be sure of this, the music will make you stand up and go crazy – this is no ‘covers band’ it is an original STAINES sound…

Robert Hart (Lead guitar, backing vox and ambience), Jamie Heath (drums), Ravi Kasinathan (Lead vox and rhythm guitar) and Warren Pegley (Bass)

Sensational Trio with a 60’s & 70’s sound – Staines

Cherry Brakewells at Staines

The Cherry Brakewells
Feb 19 2009
Hobgoblin
Staines

You could say The Cherry Brakewells were born in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The girl rock trio from London would probably have been more at home in Memphis or Louisiana circa 1966 as their influences are based firmly in the late sixties and early seventies with bands like the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream and Led Zeppelin.

The Cherry’s were formed in 2002 originally called ‘Red’. After three years of playing the small gig circuit they decided to go their separate ways.

Shay set out for the USA, looking for a new direction, collaborating as a songwriter on various projects. The high point was Tina Tuner recording one of her songs for the album ’24/7′.

Chi, meanwhile went back to her successful modelling career, strutting her stuff around the worlds most glamorous catwalks, in her time off playing drums with her Family’s band, like a noughties equivalent of the Partridge Family.

As for Monique, she took time out to follow her other passion running a vintage American clothes shop in Camden, while still jamming with a couple of local bands on the circuit.

A year passed since the band split and the girls began missing each others’ company, all sharing a sense of unfinished business to take care of. After many long distance calls they got together in London to re-form the band changing the name to Cherry Brakewells along the way. A chance meeting with a producer led to a recording contract with the girls going into the studios to cut their debut album “First Bite”.

Playing mainly British rock, punk & indie covers from the 60s to date, The Strange Deal are a hard-working 4 piece who have been gigging regularly in the Reading/Wokingham area since April 08.

They aim to strike a balance between playing numbers that are familiar to most punters with some slightly lesser known tracks that we feel deserve an airing ! So if you enjoy the music of The Who, Paul Weller, Oasis, Kaiser Chiefs & many others, check out The ’Deal – go on, you know it makes sense. + DJ PLAYING 80’s & 90’s HITS – BAR OPEN TILL 2AM

Exciting Local Alt Rock Band- in Staines

Demure at Staines

Demure
Feb 22 2009
Hobgoblin
Staines

“…Demure songs have a charm and a hummable charisma that speaks of anguish, truth, unity and vulnerability. These bitter-sweet melodies are given lush and sonically-ambitious backdrops by the crew and especially by Philip Price whose tones and strings are very memorable and are the sign and seal of a genuinely unique product…. Very reminiscent of Pearl Jam with grungy guitar, contrasting song dynamics, a pulsating and luminous lead meandering through the tune and anguished lyrical and vocal content leading to dramatic conclusions…. The band plays Alt Rock in the conventional sense but with overtures towards noise rock, especially in the way the percussion and the bass are given the freedom to spread out their wings and have dissonant aural adventures of their own, but framed within the main architecture each song. This reminded me of ‘Sonic Youth’ or ‘Butthole Surfers’…”
