Sticky End for Live Music in Staines?

Sticky End for Live Music in Staines?

Message from STICKY FUNGUS:

I guess by now that most of you (even those that have not yet visited The Club) have heard that Sticky Fungus has closed. That is correct. However…….

The club Had to close as we were informed that the Licensee had been objected to by the local Police and Licensing Authority and insufficient numbers through The Club made it un-viable. That was enough to cause a temporary closure.

Unfortunately, since we have been closed, The Club has been subject to a serious theft. Sound and Light equipment plus fixtures, fittings and Drink Stock with a total value in excess of £10,000.00 was stolen. Some has been returned but insufficient to immediately re-open. The Police are aware of who is responsible and when CID have finished with evidence and video images, those who carried out the theft, will be prosecuted….

ASFlogo

With the sudden closure of Sticky Fungus just four weeks after its faltering opening (and let’s not forget that the whole project was on/off on/off on/off more times than a professional stroboscopic light show at a Hawkwind concert in downtown  Vegas) together with the total collapse of the Phoenix as a venue, along with the complete dogs dinner at the Dog & Partridge (the latest owners apparently left in quite a hurry … without leaving a gig diary) and it would be easy to assume that the live music scene in Staines is looking shakier than Shakin’ Stevens standing on a lilo in the North Sea.

But that good ole musical equivalent of a soup-kitchen- The Hob (Hobgoblin, Staines) – is still going strong (thanks to the sheer dedication and hard work of those nice folks BUCKLE UP) every Sunday and Thursday (ACE & GRAVITY IS DEAD are on JUNE 7th entry £3) and don’t overlook the Staines Riverside Club.  Yes, yes, it may look like your nan’s front living room and have the same atmosphere as a fun-night in at a retirement home in Eastbourne, but they have hosted some magnificent acts there over the years … none more exciting than this week’s headliners – BRAINSCAPE – Friday 5th June entry £3…

And just a few stops down the line at Windsor & Eton riverside you have got the thriving Old Ticket Hall venue – almost on your doorstep. (Jun 12 2009 they host ALOUD OUT for all you Killers and  Kaiser Chiefs fans out there)… not to mention The Firestation Arts Centre a short walk down the hill from the riverside station (20th June sees Post War Years + MidiMidis + Vienna Ditto all in their Basement Studio entry £5.)

If you have the cash left, you could take a mini-cab to the ROYAL OAK HAMPTON ( Friday 12th June – Smileys Heros – or Saturday 13th June – Netherworld .) Or pop along to The Barley Mow, Shepperton – a really comfortable pub – who are hosting a classic rock night with local favourites BandX on Saturday 6th June.

We at ADPONTES really hope that Sticky’s can get up and running again (soon) and , if and when they do, we will support them as much as possible …. but in the meantime DON’T GIVE UP on STAINES ….

“Going to stand on that bridge
Keep my eyes down below
Whatever may come
And whatever may go
That rivers flowing
That rivers flowing”

With The Meat Eating Orchids…

The Meat Eating Orchids are an English rock band notable for producing a musical hybrid of 60’s pop and a brash alternative rock sound. Formed by founding members Matt Gogarty (Vocals), Sam Pickett (Vocals, Guitar) and Stuart Boyde
(Bass).

“Meat Eating Orchids forgive no one just yet…”
The Band takes their name from a line of the song Heart-Shaped Box by Nirvana. A reminder of a less harmonious past between members. After a long and fruitless search for the right drummer, while writing songs, the band were joined last
minute by friend Christian Jeyes (Drums). After one practice the group went on to record their debut EP Meet The Meat Eating Orchids at Peak Studios with Producer Chris Hamilton in the English countryside…

Receiving an astounding reception among friends and family, the EP circulated wider and all but sold out the initial hundred copies of ‘Meet The Meat Eating Orchids’ EP.This led to a couple of invitations to appear on local radio stations
and an offer to play Surface Festival Unsigned 09. With this the band took their first tentative steps onto the live music scene…

The first band to release a record on the legendary Factory Records, The Durutti Column have become the blue-print for post-punk, and a genuinely iconic musical institution.

In their 30 year’s career they have become one of the most treasured figure-heads of the British alternative scene, led by the charismatic musical virtuoso, Vini Reilly.  Their unique sound has been of influence to countless artists over the past few decades from The Red Hot Chili Peppers to Brian Eno, Morrissey and even Gilbert and George.

It is a real honour to have a band of this stature perform at a local venue: The Firestation (just a few stops down the line to Windsor & Eaton Riverside from Staines) and certainly a highlight of their early spring programme.

Delta Echoes
Feb 28 2009
Barley Mow
Shepperton

The Delta Echoes are a talented duo who re-create the country blues of the 1920s and 30s, played on Gibson acoustic and National steel guitars (most of them older than their players!), harmonica and kazoo.

They are: Richard Scruton, of Rich Pickings fame, well-known on the local folk and blues scene and an authentic interpreter of the guitar picking of the great Delta bluesmen, and Stuart Cumberpatch, who has been playing lap style and bottleneck blues on National guitars for most of the last 20 years – ten of them with the legendary Kennet Sheiks. The duo occasionally expands to a sextet with added double bass, mandolin, violin and jug!

His devastating good looks and charm have made him a big hit with the over 70’s and under 5’s, it seems to have failed miserably on all points between.

Duncan Mckenzie & Alec McCabe at Staines

Duncan McKenzie at Staines

Nov 13 2008      9:00P The Staines Riverside Club £3

Those that regularly read this column and support live music in Staines will be familiar with Duncan McKenzie the smooth acoustic and blues operator who has recently been gracing our Thameside venue with his superlative fretwork and polished repertoire of soft, yet invigorating, blues. He has worked, recently, with Mike Piggott and, ofcourse, Big Jim Sullivan. He is now back in town with Alec McCabe.

If you like your blues to be soft, luxurious and professional- this show is not to be missed.  We are very luicky to have these guys in town!

Alec McCabe is a guitar teacher (originally from Australia) who also works as a duo (with  Lizzy Templer) sometimes adding musicians to the mix to create Freepeace a standalone rock band.

Audio.Video.Disco – EP Launch Party- Staines

Audio Video Disco at Staines

Nov 15 2008      8:00P  Audio. Video. Disco. EP Launch Party     Hob Staines

So it all started when Matt and Rich played lots of acoustic guitar for a long time and eventually they got a bit bored of the acoustic circuit and decided it was time for a change.

So in came the help of Adam Linton (bass) and Tom Smith (drums) into the band. Everything seemed to fall into place very quickly and new songs were written in a flash and we hit the ground running. All we needed was the band name….so after months of rubbish ideas and even worse ideas we settled on Audio.Video.Disco. meaning “I hear, I see, I learn” in latin and as rich described it, it was the coolest thing matt has ever come up with in his life!

They have played alongside established pop act Alphabeat, played headline shows at The Fighting Cocks, sold out in their hometown and had a storming set at The Clapham Grand, things are majorly looking up. The band are set to record with engineer / producer Phil English in September and are currently preparing for their biggest gig yet……a headline slot at the London Astoria 2. It’s gonna be mad, get a ticket, don’t be the only person to miss out……

Prepare to ‘Glam’ Up at Windsor!

Glamsters at Windsor

The Glamsters
Sep 20 2008      8:00P The Ticket Hall     Windsor

We Party like it’s 1973!

The Glamsters are the ultimate 70’s Glam Rock tribute band, unlike many
tribute acts, they encompass the whole genre of the 70’s Glam Rock era,
rather than concentrating on replicating a single act. Each member
models themselves on original icons of the Glam era. Rufus is the
ultimate ‘rock god’ front man, Jonny – a legend of The Glitterband,
Pussie – KISS kitten, Jimmy – the SWEET sensation, and Donny – ‘sex on
legs’ glam guitar hero. The Glamsters have been constantly working
since 1996, concentrating on Corporate Events as well asprivate
parties, festivals and good old pub gigs. When asked Rufus often says
‘we’ve never had a bad gig, people always remember the 70’s and the
great times they had, we just take them back to those fun times. We are
the spirit of the 70’s’

RUFUS FELTZ – Vocals… JONNY TEMPO – Drums… DONNY HARVEY OSWALD –
Guitar… JIMMY RIDDLE – Bass… PUSSIE GALAM – Vocals/Sax.

Rik Martin Band Sep 20 008      9:00P THE BARLEY MOW

The Rik Martin Band is based in Surrey
& has been regularly gigging around south London since being
put together in sept 05. The band was formed after a meeting with a
good lookin’ drummer girl by the name of Helen Watt (now Helen Martin)
at Robin Bibi’s blues jam at the Grey Horse, Kingston on Thames. Bass
duties are now taken care of by none other than “BIG” Barry Pethers of
Trafficker fame. We have also recently had the pleasure of occasionally
expanding the band with the talents of Plateman’s Ross Ewart. Ross is
without doubt one of the most talented guitarists I have heard
& had the priveledge to play music with, watch out!

The Band always plays a dynamic energy packed set of both covers
& original material giving the audience a truly memorable
experience of our brand of blues & boogie.

Hope y’all like…

Feel the Raw Blues with Papa George & Steve Simpson

Papa George at Staines

Papa George & Steve Simpson Thur 24 July 2008 8:30P £3

STAINES RIVERSIDE CLUB, 6 LALEHAM ROAD STAINES 01784 452302

The Papa George Band has built up a solid reputation in its own right, and their recent CD brought in some fine comments, from both live playing for BBC Radio 2 and also at many gigs… “The first song was an upbeat shuffle, from the new CD, “DOWN AT THE STATION” – the very apt “Man With The Blues”. Papa George is a true picture of the man with the blues, with his pinstriped suit and Strat in hand, bringing in next, the favourite, “Blackjack”. His guitar sound is what a Fender Stratocaster is all about. He made it sing on, “Cleansin’ My Soul”, a new soulful blues number.”

The tools of his trade are Fender Stratocasters, Flying Finn Guitars, an Amistar Reso-phonic Stager (specially commissioned by Resound, UK) and National Reso-phonic steel guitars. Papa George’s solo version of his self-penned “Broken Mirror” (“Being Free…ain’t no crime” PG – Solo CD) was selected for the “Artists in Resonance” CD, which forms part of the National Reso-phonic Guitars 2003/4 catalogue. Two songs (from “DOWN AT THE STATION” PGB) have attracted recognition: “Blues With A Feeling” was used as part of the soundtrack of “World Without Waves”, which won the Milagro Award for Best South-West Film, at the 2004 Santa Fe Film Festival and “Moonshadows On Coconut Grove” was included on a compilation album, “A Place Called Hawaii 3”, which won an Hawaiian Music Award for Best Compilation Album.

Go ProgRock with Magenta, Kingston

Magenta

MAGENTA, House Of Progression, The Peel, Kingston , JULY 26 8:00P

When Rob Reed released Revolutions in 2001 under the banner Magenta little did he realise that he had started something that would take on a life of its own. Revolutions was a huge success, and this led to clamourings for a live show, so, in characteristically meticulous fashion, Rob put together a band built around his keyboards and the exceptional voive of Christina Booth.

The band played some prestigious festivals in those early days, including Progeny in London, and Bajaprog in Mexico. 2004 saw all the early promise come to fruition with the released of the acclaimed second album Seven, a live double album and their first foray into the singles market with two well-received EPs, “Broken” and “I’m Alive”, not to mention some remarkable live performances, culminating in The Classic Rock Societies Best Live Band award. 2005 saw the release of The gathering live DVD, a headline appearance at the Rosfest festival in the USA and more yet more awards. The bands reputation continued to increase as an entertaining, dynamic live act, with fans travelling to UK gigs from as far away as Italy, Russia, Hungary, Peru, USA, Canada and New Zealand.

The long awaited third studio album Home was released in 2006 to worldwide acclaim, with live concerts following in Portugal and Holland. In September, the band played in front of it’s largest crowd yet, as 4000 witnessed them support Roger Hodgson in Belgium 2007 saw the band moving forward yet again, signing with Tigermoth Records at the beginning of the year. The single “Speechless”, released in March, made a dent in the UK singles chart, and all the band’s EPs were re-recorded and gathered together as “The Singles” in April.

The band also played live in Barcelona, Spain with IQ at the Tiana Festival and made another trip to the USA, this time at Nearfest in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. After a short break, the band played some highly successful live dates at the end of the year, one of which – at the Point in Cardiff – was taped for a live DVD for release in 2008. 2008 has already seen the band pick up Best band and best Female singer at the Classic Rock Society awards, and with the new album Metamorphosis due in April, the future continues to look very bright for Magenta – the true colour of Progressive Rock.

Band Members:

Rob Reed – keyboards, guitar, bass, vocals. Christina – lead vocals, lyrics. Chris Fry – guitar, vocals. Daniel Fry – bass. Kieran Bailey – drums. Colin Edwards – guitar and keys Steve Reed – lyrics

Influences:

Genesis, Garbage, Marillion, Massive Attack, Mew, Mike Oldfield, Bjork, Renaissance, It Bites, Pink Floyd, Eurythmics, Yes.

Seventeen years ago, before he became an internationally acclaimed, three-time Grammy-winning pop vocalist and songwriter who has sold more than 15 million albums worldwide, Seal was a hot property on Britain’s house music/rave scene. He hooked up with legendary producer Trevor Horn and scored two hits, 1990’s “Killer” (with techno artist Adamski) and 1991’s U.S. Top Ten single “Crazy,” from his eponymous debut album — a genre-defying fusion of soul, pop, rock, R&B, and propulsive grooves that announced the arrival of an innovative new talent.

Now the London-born Seal is preparing to release his fifth album, System, due in November from Warner Bros

Folk it up with Kindred Spirit at Shepperton

Kindred Spirit at Shepperton

Kindred Spirit – Jul 26 2008 8.00P Barley Mow, Shepperton

Kindred Spirit are renowned for their stunning takes on some classic tracks and will take your breath away with an incredible version of Bob Dylans, All Along The Watchtower. The stunning nature of the treatment of these tracks is due to the hauntingly beautiful and deeply emotional voice of Elaine enhanced by the extraordinary flute playing of Annie Parker in combination with the phenomenal violin playing of Gavin or Sim Jones.

Another very special feature of the Kindred Spirit band is the musical interplay between lead instrumentalists Gavin or Sim and Annie. Not only do they produce beautiful solos and foot stomping jigs and reels but they are superb at on the spot improvisations and fly into thrilling musical duels live on stage. This is a chance for you to experience & enjoy our favourite local folk band.
