With THE DAQUIRIS

Albany Down can be counted on for pleasure and honest to goodness fun. Here is what ADPONTES had to say about this great band last time they came into town:

The sound of Albany Down is stripped-down-to-the-waist no nonsense rhythm and blues 70’s inspired Brit rock ( the feel of early ‘Free‘ or ‘John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers‘) but with a bit of jazz-funk to mix it up a little…very fine and accomplished performance…insistent guitar hooks, stripped down licks and rattling good-time rock…

Classic Soul Sounds -  Live at Ascot

Soul Disciples at Ascot

Soul Disciples
Mar 21 2009
Jagz
Ascot

West London’s Soul Disciples came together late in 2005 with the express wish of bringing the classic soul sounds of the 60’s & 70’s to the dance floors of Britain.

Dismayed at the disservice these great tunes are being paid by many covers bands, we have resolved to make our interpretations as faithful to
the spirit of the originals as possible.

The soulful voice of Miss Clare “Bubbles” Moloney combined with the authentic soul sound of the SD band has to be witnessed to be believed.

The Soul Disciples constantly strive to instill their performances with the spirit and skill which made soul music of the 60’s & 70’s so exciting.

The SD’s have found themselves in the enviable position of having an 8-piece line-up which combines experience, virtuosity, personality & good looks …
All wrapped up with a shared love of Classic Motown, Atlantic, Stax & Northern Soul.

Saturday, 21st March
Show will start at 8.45

Fresh NEW blues & Heavy Rock – Live Twickenham

Four Wheel Drive at Twickenham

Four Wheel Drive
Mar 05 2009
Filthys
Twickenham

Four Wheel Drive is a band that exists to play live. They deliver what can only be described as a relentless onslaught of good time, balls out Rock ‘N’ Roll. Ben Austwick and Paddy Achtelik provide rhythm guitar interplay that constantly bombards the audience from both sides of the stage; while Ben also hits you with incendiary, gut-wrenching, Blues-based lead guitar.

The rhythm section generates a force capable of knocking down walls, yet with enough control to retain the R’n'B feel of ’70s Aerosmith and Rolling Stones. The band have been clocked at close to 120 decibels in rehearsals, almost earning the Guitar Institute their first ASBO!

This musical force of nature is topped and led by Jamie’s vocals. Switching between a sleazy drawl and a ball-busting scream, the vocals compliment both the Rhythm ‘n’ Blues and Rock elements of the band. Tightly rehearsed vocal harmonies add an extra dimension to the songs, giving the live performances the same depth as the recordings.

The songs have always been written with the live show in mind and the delivery is enough to get anybody’s mouth away from their pint. Four Wheel Drive is made up of a highly “driven” collection of individuals whose lives are designed around the band to make sure it is constantly moving forward. New material is always being written and they can, and do, play any night of the week.

Jamie and Ben’s mutual love of all things Rock ‘N’ Roll make them a well suited writing partnership. Above you will find a taster of the music they’ve written since graduating from The Institute in summer 2007. After finding guitarist Paddy Achtelik at the new Guitar Institute in Kilburn, and introducing extremely talented drummer Will Richards thanks to ACM in Guildford… The Band is ready… It’s Time To Go.

Mercury Prize Nominated Strings-  Windsor

Basquiat Strings at Windsor

Basquiat Strings
Mar 07 2009
Firestation
Windsor

Basquiat Strings are a five piece string group with their own repertoire of originals (composed by cellist Ben Davis) and arrangements.   Ben finds inspiration from the raucous, driving Hungarian string groups of Transylvania, the luxuriously rich Brahms sextets and the unruly compositions and workshop arrangements of Charles Mingus. Well, all that and people asking him to fix strings for their sessions…

The players have all trained classically yet are “naturally bilingual….wholly imbued with jazz’s improvisational facility.” (Chris Parker)   The group has been involved with various other live projects including that of Juliet Roberts and Andrew McCormack; and has recorded for Ty, Darren Emerson, Monica Vasconcelos (Nois 4) Border Crossing and the Ed Moto produced Jazzinho record.

Basquiat Strings were nominated for the 2007 Mercury Prize for their album “Basquiat Strings with Seb Rochford”…

With The Meat Eating Orchids…

The Meat Eating Orchids are an English rock band notable for producing a musical hybrid of 60′s pop and a brash alternative rock sound. Formed by founding members Matt Gogarty (Vocals), Sam Pickett (Vocals, Guitar) and Stuart Boyde
(Bass).

“Meat Eating Orchids forgive no one just yet…”
The Band takes their name from a line of the song Heart-Shaped Box by Nirvana. A reminder of a less harmonious past between members. After a long and fruitless search for the right drummer, while writing songs, the band were joined last
minute by friend Christian Jeyes (Drums). After one practice the group went on to record their debut EP Meet The Meat Eating Orchids at Peak Studios with Producer Chris Hamilton in the English countryside…

Receiving an astounding reception among friends and family, the EP circulated wider and all but sold out the initial hundred copies of ‘Meet The Meat Eating Orchids’ EP.This led to a couple of invitations to appear on local radio stations
and an offer to play Surface Festival Unsigned 09. With this the band took their first tentative steps onto the live music scene…

It is a real honour to have a band of this stature perform at a local venue: The Firestation (just a few stops down the line to Windsor & Eaton Riverside from Staines) and certainly a highlight of their early spring programme.

‘Authentic’ Delta Blues -  in Shepperton

Delta Echoes at Shepperton

Delta Echoes
Feb 28 2009
Barley Mow
Shepperton

The Delta Echoes are a talented duo who re-create the country blues of the 1920s and 30s, played on Gibson acoustic and National steel guitars (most of them older than their players!), harmonica and kazoo.

They are: Richard Scruton, of Rich Pickings fame, well-known on the local folk and blues scene and an authentic interpreter of the guitar picking of the great Delta bluesmen, and Stuart Cumberpatch, who has been playing lap style and bottleneck blues on National guitars for most of the last 20 years – ten of them with the legendary Kennet Sheiks. The duo occasionally expands to a sextet with added double bass, mandolin, violin and jug!

A New Band Rises at Staines

Five Foot Something at Staines

Five Foot Something
Feb 19 2009
Hobgoblin
Staines

Of all the chances?  The Goddess of music works in strange and mysterious ways- Tis True, Tis True…our favourite STAINES local guitar/vox hero Ravi K (Succotash etc. etc) bumped into his new neighbour – Robert Hart- they had never met before. Robert was carrying his guitar and amp to his car.

Their conversation went along similar lines to this; Ravi “Do you play guitar?” Robert “Does the pope wear a silly hat and a bear defecate in the woods?” Ravi “Me too re: the hat (and guitar)- though I don’t poo under the trees”. And thus, Five Foot Something were born.

Robert hauled in friend Warren who is a mean bassist and later Jamie heard what was going on and wanted ‘in’ too….This is their inauguration – so we want a big turn out at The Hob (but they have been rehearsing like crazy) the sound is kinda mixed up but there are funky vibes, punky roots and elements of just about every musical style that washes over these local boys. But, be sure of this, the music will make you stand up and go crazy – this is no ‘covers band’ it is an original STAINES sound…

Robert Hart (Lead guitar, backing vox and ambience), Jamie Heath (drums), Ravi Kasinathan (Lead vox and rhythm guitar) and Warren Pegley (Bass)

Sensational Trio with a 60′s & 70′s sound – Staines

Cherry Brakewells at Staines

The Cherry Brakewells
Feb 19 2009
Hobgoblin
Staines

You could say The Cherry Brakewells were born in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The girl rock trio from London would probably have been more at home in Memphis or Louisiana circa 1966 as their influences are based firmly in the late sixties and early seventies with bands like the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream and Led Zeppelin.

The Cherry’s were formed in 2002 originally called ‘Red’. After three years of playing the small gig circuit they decided to go their separate ways.

Shay set out for the USA, looking for a new direction, collaborating as a songwriter on various projects. The high point was Tina Tuner recording one of her songs for the album ’24/7′.

Chi, meanwhile went back to her successful modelling career, strutting her stuff around the worlds most glamorous catwalks, in her time off playing drums with her Family’s band, like a noughties equivalent of the Partridge Family.

As for Monique, she took time out to follow her other passion running a vintage American clothes shop in Camden, while still jamming with a couple of local bands on the circuit.

A year passed since the band split and the girls began missing each others’ company, all sharing a sense of unfinished business to take care of. After many long distance calls they got together in London to re-form the band changing the name to Cherry Brakewells along the way. A chance meeting with a producer led to a recording contract with the girls going into the studios to cut their debut album “First Bite”.

Exciting Local Alt Rock Band- in Staines

Demure at Staines

Demure
Feb 22 2009
Hobgoblin
Staines

“…Demure songs have a charm and a hummable charisma that speaks of anguish, truth, unity and vulnerability. These bitter-sweet melodies are given lush and sonically-ambitious backdrops by the crew and especially by Philip Price whose tones and strings are very memorable and are the sign and seal of a genuinely unique product…. Very reminiscent of Pearl Jam with grungy guitar, contrasting song dynamics, a pulsating and luminous lead meandering through the tune and anguished lyrical and vocal content leading to dramatic conclusions…. The band plays Alt Rock in the conventional sense but with overtures towards noise rock, especially in the way the percussion and the bass are given the freedom to spread out their wings and have dissonant aural adventures of their own, but framed within the main architecture each song. This reminded me of ‘Sonic Youth’ or ‘Butthole Surfers’…”

Netherworld Rocks

2211_netherworld

Netherworld Rocks! Feb 13th 2009 Old Ticket Hall, Windsor

“Heavyweight musicians” is not a term to be bandied about willy-nilly, but in the case of Netherworld, if the cap fits- wear it. Local lads (of a certain age) Jason Stretch, Paul Smith and Ian Roberts play the kind of heavy metal and industrial strength rock n’ roll that mama said would make your head go deaf. They play it so powerfully, and at such eardrum shreddingly high decibel levels, that it feels like your entrails have been torn clean from your body and whipped up into the electrically charged air in a frenzy of savage butchery.

Jason is the man mountain lead guitarist with a an effective voice and a cool-hand whose fingers lacerate the frets in a cruel, incisive, sharply cutting manner much like a sushi chef on a day-out at the samurai sword factory. His foaming froth of jet-black hair blowin’ free like a cornfield, and total concentration on the fingerwork, mark him out as a truly experienced and proficient axeman.

‘Smiffy’ Smith is the bands ‘second’ vocalist (he does mean and cruel vox whereas Jason does clean-cut yet impulsive vox) and looks like a slightly more paranoid version of Ritchie Blackmore with dark beady eyes glancing this way and that as if some unspecified, yet hideous, graveyard creature was stalking him. But his bass guitar pounds out those dark stormy notes with controlled aggression.

Ian Roberts looks like a slightly more gangly version of Robert Plant with a loose mop of golden locks constantly frizzing and boiling on top of the stove whilst, beneath, the frantic sticks pummel the hell out of a seriously large drum set. The effect is the musical equivalent of the advance of a mechanised infantry brigade. Threatening,  posturing,  powerful heavy metal.

Plenty of AC/DC goes down well with the crowd. Followed by bucketfuls of Thin Lizzy and washed down with Hendrix, Sabbath, Motorhead…this band have a large ‘biker following’ and you can see why. But the Windsor crowd at tonights Old Ticket Hall gig were slightly more charming and slightly less greasy than the normal Netherworld punters. They politely cheered
and clapped each song and were clearly delighted with the offerings from this metal madness.

The acoustics at the Ticket Hall didn’t do some of the songs justice and, at times, the feedback was annoying (the room is like a huge cathedral with an enormous high ceiling and yard-upon-yard of stark blank walls.)  A small stage canopy helps to muffle some of the echo, but the venue is a ‘difficult’ space. It was also damn cold on top of and in front of stage and the Netherworld boys were obviously having some difficulty getting their joints warmed up…I mean the joints in their fingers and wrists!! (No smokin’ inside the Old Ticket Hall.)

So, out into the crisp night air with my eardrums melting as quickly as last week’s garden snowman… what did I think of them? Hard working, monstrously strong and a multi-talented group of severely serious heavy metal masters. In fact, heavyweight musicians.
