Miss Vickery at Staines Hobgoblin

Those definitive slapping popping bass lines appear to come easily to the funkytron Miss Vickery bass player Ad Roq.

Ad is always melodically inventive, and has a way of underpinning the defining high-jinks of each song. He slaps or pops away whilst slender four o’clock shadow-man ‘Seen’  (aka the lead singer Meat Pack) – he has that taughtness of jaw-line that reminds the audience of Chris Martin – provides electric vocal tones together with buoyancy and humour to the proceedings.

The ‘Dave Grohl’ impersonator  ‘Bru’ adds crunchy guitar to the rough waves of sound creating such hectically funktastic  pieces to the process that make you just wanna jump up all together now and get the fire started. Bru is a one-man flaming groove machine. He thrills as he trills. Then, on the other side of the stage, you have a member of the band that seems to have been ‘embedded’ in the same way that those BBC correspondents are embedded with the Para’s in Afghanistan. This character – Biff- altogether seems to ignore the danger and brutality of his immediate vicinity. He wears ill-fitting combat dress and blinks in the intensity of the bright lighting. He looks damaged and slightly disturbed in the same way that Kate Adie does when she reports back from a war-zone. It is only when Biff lights up those chords on guitar do you finally realise that he is a sound-master in his own right, with vamps and bebops aplenty in his fast-tempo repertoire.

And for sure, everyone loves shiny, happy Debs. She is damn good drummer, whose lusty, yearning, pounding percussive rhythms set pulses racing and drive the motivations of this juicy band.

It is a long way from Barnwell, South Carolina to the Sunbury-on-Thames shopping centre,  from the dawning of early funk to where we are today with Miss Vickery in Staines. And some may wonder whether there is any place in this sad and depressing and distressingly ‘grown up’ demoralised world for funkyness…  as if these swinging syncopated guitar rhythms are now as obsolete as flared trousers and tie-dye T-shirts.  And the answer is definitely yes. We need entertainment. More than ever we need it now. We need those big fat juicy sounds. And we need to dance. We really do. So we ask Miss Vickery, indeed, we implore you, to take us away on your journey to Funkytown.

Due to a reliance on guitars, Miss Vickery’s brand of funk rock is less Latin-funky (UK funk) than other afro-beat sounds and yet has more syncopation and general danceable grooviness than their more ‘punk’ funk chums like ‘Red Hot Chili Peppers’ or ‘Gang of Four’. With a strong rhythmic groove connection between guitars and drums playing interlocking rhythms, the band has the audience at The Hob Staines going wild with their dance hits like  ‘My Hat Loves New York’ or the naughty song ‘Name That Stain’ (renamed ‘Name that Staines’ by singer Seen on the night.) The sumptuous bass lines and the exuberant bounciness was interspersed by rhythmic hits provided by slender slices of lead guitar.

The generally rude humour and richly burlesque sounds continued with a crowd pleasing favourite ‘the Clap’ that carried the strong groove into the night air – the kind of groove that made me wanna dance out into the street and keep on going all through the night till work in the morning.

The last time AD PONTES saw this young band at The Hob, Staines we described the sound as ” Refreshingly effervescent cherry-pop fizz for a (spring) day…”

This band got to the UK final of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest a few years back. Currently, the lads are teetering on the very edge of ‘stadium’ success having won the title of the “Best UK live and unsigned band”. We wish them well. Five Foot Something – Hobgoblin Staines

Five Foot or thereabouts

I’ll have two foot of this … and a yard of that.

I once went water skiing. And the instructor said, It’s easy. Just hang on. If you can. Then rise up. That is all there is to this game. Yes. Fine. I said. But it wasn’t. And I couldn’t. And I didn’t. But so what?  I tried.

Here are some equally useful instructions for Staines newest band ‘Five Foot Something’. It’s easy. Get yourself a supporting role on a tour with someone famous (preferably Hard-Fi or their equivalent) then rise up. That’s about all there is to this game.

If they were a bar drink then ‘Five Foot Something’ would be fruity and non threatening fruit based beverage – an orange and  mango J20 perhaps ….or some kind of smoothie… but they are not a drink. They are a Staines flavored rock band. I over-emphasise that they are a Staines rock band because that is important to them- and to us. Their debut performance was at the Hob, Staines. (The Hob is the main place ‘to be seen’ in Staines.) And the whole population of Staines came out to see them and wish-them-well. (Maybe you were there, but if you were not, then it is “Your Look Out” as Mama used to say.)  They sing about Staines. They work in Staines. They drink in Staines. They go out with people in Staines. They look like they come from Staines. And they grew up. In Staines.

Yup. Staines. This is a recurrent theme in the 5’? song-book. Furthermore, to say that this band is breezy and cheerful is an understatement. If the band was your neighbour then he would be the kind of bloke who would bring your washing in from the line when it started raining because ‘you may have forgotten.’ Or he would ‘do your lawn’ because he has already got the flymo out, after all, and it’s no bother is it? The music is as light and refreshing as a pool-side shower on a stifling hot day in the Canaries. It is fizzy and quite bubbly. It eases your strains, soothes your tired muscles and cools you down. It is non-threatening. Undaunting. It is like a lunch-time drink with your mates. But then your Auntie shows up. But all your pals are actually fine with that. And she turns out to be very funny. So she stays. And we all have another drink.

Modish, in a kind of late 1960’s ‘Small Faces’ type way, the band can also remind you of latter years punk bands like ‘Green Day’ – with their plentiful tunes all tight and poppy – like a prep school hostess in her crisp clean shirt. Also, somewhere deep deep down, there is the soul of an R&B skeleton trying to clamber his way out. Maybe there is also some post punk lurking about down in those dark places too. The musicality is never far away; Ever so slightly whimsical, there is often a catchy beat or a heady vibe to bob you along…reminiscent of ‘The Searchers’ with strong lead vocals, tight arrangements and secondary harmonies. There is also some dream pop imagery in the mix too, reminding me of  ‘This Mortal Coil’ and even ‘David Bowie’ circa Hunky Dory, with the locomotive beats propelling each song along, past the gently frothing motifs that gently waft across the scenery.

There is a familiarity and a quaint ‘Englishness’ and earthiness to the songs and lyrics. At times it is almost as if Five Foot Something is trying to conceal the fact that they are actually a folk band struggling to get away from their self-imposed constraints – their rock n ‘roll ropes and chains- as it were. Naturally there is plenty of punk and indie stuff in their sound too… but the substance of this is unchallenging, undemanding even.  The songs lack any brashness or harshness in their style or mood. They certainly lack any bitterness. But the sounds do not lack finesse. There is a profusion of colours and textures. This music feels ‘good for you’ in the same way that goats cheese on crisp-bread feels good for you. Crunchy? Creamy? Smooth? Yes, yes, yes but a bit- shall I dare to suggest this- insubstantial? Maybe. Their music reminds me of those adverts where the fat bird suggests to her friend that she won’t feel ‘wicked’ or ‘naughty’ if she eats this (or, in the case of 5 Foot Something, listens to it.) Straight after a ‘Five Foot Something’ gig you would “just have to” knock over a police no waiting cone or wee on your mums shoes…merely to somehow re-balance the karma.

After a bit of a nervy start (but it was a big crowd for a debut performance, so I can forgive that,) Ravi’s lead vocals got stronger and more confident, gradually building up to master the performance by the second half of the set. Robert Hart (lead guitar and general ambience) was able to weave a genuinely fine and intricate framework of delicate and shimmering sounds from the outset. He also provided a series of robust and solid arrangements when required. Rob is, quite clearly, a very talented young musician. It would be nice to see him share the front of the platform a bit more, up there with Ravi.

And Ravi, looking like some cross between the young ‘Michael Corleone’ in The Godfather and the ‘Young Winston’ acted by Simon Ward (i.e. big eyes – no sleep,) played softly reliable rhythm guitar with Warren Pegley supporting on sensible bass. Jamie Heath completes the sound of the squad, on drums. But this outfit feels like it is Ravi’s baby. There were quite a few – if not Succotash moments then as near as damn it Succotash moments- in there. And, by fronting the band, Rav seemed to be imprinting the corporate sound of the others somehow.

The set was a good 45 minutes worth of entertainment and pleasure for the Staines crowd. There was a full album’s worth of material in there and at least two decent singles within the magic box of tricks presented to the audience. No shocks. No pain. No misfortunes. It was a good solid, workaday indie rock performance. By a band from the ‘burbs to the folk of the ‘burbs. If not instantly memorable, anthemic or immediate, there were at least one or two tunes in the show for each and every person to take home and put upon their mantelpiece. A capable and complete rock set.

Oh yeah, and the boys chose to wear matching tartan wool-look mountain shirts and short linen ties. The visual effect, certainly from way across the pub, was that the local B&Q had closed early for the evening and so all the trainee managers had popped in ‘for a quick one’ after a long hard day grafting on the shop floor. And soon, after a few orange and mango J20’s, they would be ready to scoot on home in their Astras, back to “Moormeads”, back to their lay-dees… back to Ash-lee, Kay-lee & Hay-lee, and to their nippers Jayne, Wayne, and Charmayne. It was a great look. Subtle, tongue-in-cheek Middlesex humour.

Give them their due- the boys have tried.  They got up and they did it. And, do you know what… I think they’re gonna make it!

Are we excited yet?

One Response to “Five Foot Something – Hobgoblin Staines”

  1. Sorry mate, after reading this review I’m left wondering if you even saw this gig or listened to their music. And after further consideration, I don’t actually know what you’re talking about in about three-fourths of this. Do you actually like the band or not? I want to know more about how the band sounded, what the crowd thought, why certain members rocked (or didn’t) the house. Generalities are fine and dandy, but have no purpose. Give us more meat!!! I thought the gig was fantastic and was very excited to know if other people felt as ecstatic as I, but I still don’t know what you thought after all this.

Thanks for the feedback Lydia… your comments are  ‘seen and noted’ !
I know what you mean, but we are all in this together- it was a debut performance – so I can only judge the boys- like you- on this show. I very much enjoyed it and I think I compare the boys favourably with Green Day,  Small Faces, This Mortal Coil and even Bowie!!! I will be at their next gig Mar 28 2009   The Red Lion, Egham and, by then, we will really be able to see where they are going.
Best Wishes- and thanks again- Neil

A New Band Rises at Staines

Five Foot Something at Staines

Five Foot Something
Feb 19 2009
Hobgoblin
Staines

Of all the chances?  The Goddess of music works in strange and mysterious ways- Tis True, Tis True…our favourite STAINES local guitar/vox hero Ravi K (Succotash etc. etc) bumped into his new neighbour – Robert Hart- they had never met before. Robert was carrying his guitar and amp to his car.

Their conversation went along similar lines to this; Ravi “Do you play guitar?” Robert “Does the pope wear a silly hat and a bear defecate in the woods?” Ravi “Me too re: the hat (and guitar)- though I don’t poo under the trees”. And thus, Five Foot Something were born.

Robert hauled in friend Warren who is a mean bassist and later Jamie heard what was going on and wanted ‘in’ too….This is their inauguration – so we want a big turn out at The Hob (but they have been rehearsing like crazy) the sound is kinda mixed up but there are funky vibes, punky roots and elements of just about every musical style that washes over these local boys. But, be sure of this, the music will make you stand up and go crazy – this is no ‘covers band’ it is an original STAINES sound…

Robert Hart (Lead guitar, backing vox and ambience), Jamie Heath (drums), Ravi Kasinathan (Lead vox and rhythm guitar) and Warren Pegley (Bass)

Sensational Trio with a 60′s & 70′s sound – Staines

Cherry Brakewells at Staines

The Cherry Brakewells
Feb 19 2009
Hobgoblin
Staines

You could say The Cherry Brakewells were born in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The girl rock trio from London would probably have been more at home in Memphis or Louisiana circa 1966 as their influences are based firmly in the late sixties and early seventies with bands like the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream and Led Zeppelin.

The Cherry’s were formed in 2002 originally called ‘Red’. After three years of playing the small gig circuit they decided to go their separate ways.

Shay set out for the USA, looking for a new direction, collaborating as a songwriter on various projects. The high point was Tina Tuner recording one of her songs for the album ’24/7′.

Chi, meanwhile went back to her successful modelling career, strutting her stuff around the worlds most glamorous catwalks, in her time off playing drums with her Family’s band, like a noughties equivalent of the Partridge Family.

As for Monique, she took time out to follow her other passion running a vintage American clothes shop in Camden, while still jamming with a couple of local bands on the circuit.

A year passed since the band split and the girls began missing each others’ company, all sharing a sense of unfinished business to take care of. After many long distance calls they got together in London to re-form the band changing the name to Cherry Brakewells along the way. A chance meeting with a producer led to a recording contract with the girls going into the studios to cut their debut album “First Bite”.

“…Demure songs have a charm and a hummable charisma that speaks of anguish, truth, unity and vulnerability. These bitter-sweet melodies are given lush and sonically-ambitious backdrops by the crew and especially by Philip Price whose tones and strings are very memorable and are the sign and seal of a genuinely unique product…. Very reminiscent of Pearl Jam with grungy guitar, contrasting song dynamics, a pulsating and luminous lead meandering through the tune and anguished lyrical and vocal content leading to dramatic conclusions…. The band plays Alt Rock in the conventional sense but with overtures towards noise rock, especially in the way the percussion and the bass are given the freedom to spread out their wings and have dissonant aural adventures of their own, but framed within the main architecture each song. A truly remarkable man, there are few musicians in the world who have been master of so many styles and who possess the breadth of vision as this most creative of Welshmen. Throughout his long and distinguished career he has worked with pop stars, country singers, opera divas, variety artists, funk legends, played on countless sound tracks, TV shows and jingles, been a featured soloist with symphony orchestras and has composed chamber works, symphonies and concertos. He is also something of a musical pedagogue.

A Doctor of Music, he could have quite easily pursued a brilliant career as an academic. As if this isn’t enough, he just happens to be one of the UK’s most gifted jazz improvisers. The trio includes Paul Morgan on bass and Mark Fletcher on drums.

THE OLD TICKET HALL, WINDSOR  FREE !!

Old ticket hall – Windsor
01753 854554

Super Sundays Presents ‘Birds of a Feather’ our Resident Acoustic Duo. They say that birds of a feather fly together – well this phrase couldn’t be more true for this dynamic singing duo from Windsor, Berkshire. Gloria Garcia and Odette Michell have been performing high quality live cover versions for over 4 years collectively – choosing superb songs from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s – right through to the present day. Their acoustic take on these songs is uniquely identifiable by their remarkable two-part vocal harmonies. This is live music at its sweetest and best – pure live acoustic entertainment with more than a splash of sophistication.

About Odette

After exchanging the piano for the guitar, at the age of fifteen, Odette began writing and recording her own songs when she was just sixteen years old. Continuing her study of music at the Nottingham Trent University, Odette went on to receive her B.A Hons in Contemporary Music. A matter of days after graduation, and spurred on by a healthy wanderlust, Odette took off for the beautiful West coast of Canada with little more than a small backpack and a spirit of adventure. With her last remaining $30 she purchased a guitar and a (childs) bicycle, and made a new home for herself in Vancouver, where she spent many happy months delving into the local music scene.

In the years since she has played solo as well as with various bands up and down the UK, including the Internationally acclaimed Cambridge Folk Festival Club stage, where she has performed for three years consecutively and been fortunate enough to share the stage with musical legends Joan Baez, Eddi Reader and Kathryn Williams.Originally from Cambridge, UK, Odette recently relocated to Windsor; and is currently in the process of securing a number of choice festival dates for this coming summer.

About Gloria

Gloria Garcia was born in the beautiful wine region of Rioja in Northern Spain. She began singing at the tender age of five, greatly influenced by her grandmother, who was an opera singer. She started to get involved in a church choir and took guitar lessons but it was not until she graduated in 2000 that she decided to take a
challenge and travel to the UK looking to further her music opportunities.Gloria’s stunning vocal talent started to get attention while performing on her own or accompanied by various bands in the Berkshire and London area. Her style blends from pop and soul to latin and jazz, performing in English and Spanish.

Besides this, Gloria was selected in the last 75 in Pop Idol Series 3 in 2003, amongst 23000 contestants, getting really good reviews from judges Simon Cowell and Pete Watermann. She was also getting some media attention when she made it to the 10 final contestants in the VH1 Divas London Auditions.Gloria has an extensive session singing experience under her belt, having worked with very renowned producers such as In Demand (Cindy Lauper, Steve Brookstein’s production team), Master Stepz (Choice FM DJ) and Amit Kamboj (Metalhead records Goldies label). She has also fronted various bands such as Nu Future, Freedom Republic and the acoustic duo Garcia, performing extensively in well known festivals and venues such as Jagz in Ascot, The Cellar Bar in Bracknell and West One Four in London.

Gloria also manages community music projects and is a freelance singing teacher for Youth Music, The Arts Council, Thames Valley University and various other schools.

Gloria currently accompanies herself on guitar and piano. She usually plays at pubs and acoustic venues around Windsor and London.

Turisas at Southampton Guildhall

SOUTHAMPTON GUILDHALL
Thursday 28th September 2008

Photo by Ossi Laakso, (c) Turisas 2004

Metal / Black Metal / Death Metal

“A band with Swords and Uggs”

WARLORD NYGÅRD – Voc.
JUSSI WICKSTRÖM – Gtr.
TUDE LEHTONEN – Drums
HANNES HORMA – Bass
OLLI VÄNSKÄ – Violin
LISKO – Acc.

“Toor-izz-ass, clap, Toor-izz-ass, clap, Toor-izz-ass, clap”… then onto the stage at Southampton Guildhall exploded several large blonde men (and a laydee) clad in lumps of dead sheep and (mostly) wearing ill-fitting uggs.

And Lo, this was Turisas come unto us.

Turisas is a Finnish viking metal band from Hämeenlinna. They were established in 1997 by Mathias Nygård and Jussi Wickström and designated almost at once as a Viking Metal band – named after an ancient Finnish God of War.

When I saw them last night  on their current tour (supporting ‘Dragonforce’) they exclaimed their music was mighty ‘battle metal’. Since they use accordion and violin, I find this a little hard to swallow. Since when do the massed bands of Her Majesty’s Household Division (for instance) lug squeeze-boxes and fiddles onto the battleground? But because of this morris-dance affectation, the band could also be pigeonholed into the folk metal genre ( see also Finntroll, Ensiferum, Korpiklaani and Moonsorrow.)

The supposedly heavy metal guitars in this band are, to be honest, almost extraneous and the rhythm guitar is often employed just for that-chugging out some rhythm- whilst the bass plunks away unobtrusively. The featured instrument in this band is the violin, courtesy of Olli Vanska. According to Turisas this meek little humble instrument is about to re-adjust the cosmic equilibrium that has been altered by those arrogant upstarts- the wicked electric guitars! Haven’t they heard of ‘The Devil Went Down to Georgia’ in Finnish-land?

Any band that has, as a major feature of its repertoire, Boney M’s singalonga-cossack ‘Ra Ra Rasputin’ is OK by me. This song always was plagiarism at its finest, mixing some trad. Turkish anthems with Cozy Powell’s ‘Dance With The Devil’ beat and pretending to be authentic disco. So why shouldn’t a viking-metal band claim it is their anthem?

Even though Turisas has bouzouki and balalejka-themed pretensions, this is ultimately music that Klingon’s would listen to around the campfire whilst droning on about the House of Duras. Lots of anthemic battle-shouting and Oi Oi Oi’s, then plenty of strutting about doing semi-nazi saluting type stuff. The average age of the crowd at Southampton was about 15… so maybe this is something to be a tiny bit concerned about.  But, no, this is he-man stuff, it is comic book stuff, it is Blue Peter teenage mutant ninja turtles in a bit of sticky-back plastic stuff. A bit of dressing up (albeit as a Viking goat-ostler) and striding around looking big and sounding scary is just fun and didn’t ever hurt anyone. Did it?. When was the last time Finland invaded anything (other than the Eurovision)? And, to be honest,  these leering viking-skulls in their leather nappies are no more fierce, frightening or imposing than your average school music teacher.

Unlike power-metal, there is not much symphonic context within the sound of Turisas, just a lot of growling and some riff-based hokum. There isn’t much light there either, the dirges are battle anthems for the office of the dead. On the whole, the Nordic jeremiad’s are less pessimistic than they ought to be, relishing and celebrating death and honour rather more like football anthems than proper warrior eulogies.

The blackness is not really in there either (unlike Opeth, Trivium, Annihilator, Wintersun etc) mainly because: 1) You can’t take men wearing uggs and sheepskin throws seriously and 2) because any band that plays Boney M disco covers is about as manly and masculine as Julian Clary wearing a pink tutu whilst dancing as the Sugar Plum Fairy in this season’s ‘end of the pier’ performance of Round the Horn. So this is not a band for death metal/black metal heads.  It is just a fun ‘show-band’ for the kids.

Southampton is noted for being the home of the RMS Titanic and the Spitfire, both went down well. So did Turisas. That says a lot.
