Duncan Mckenzie & Alec McCabe at Staines

Duncan McKenzie at Staines

Nov 13 2008      9:00P The Staines Riverside Club £3

Those that regularly read this column and support live music in Staines will be familiar with Duncan McKenzie the smooth acoustic and blues operator who has recently been gracing our Thameside venue with his superlative fretwork and polished repertoire of soft, yet invigorating, blues. He has worked, recently, with Mike Piggott and, ofcourse, Big Jim Sullivan. He is now back in town with Alec McCabe.

If you like your blues to be soft, luxurious and professional- this show is not to be missed.  We are very luicky to have these guys in town!

Alec McCabe is a guitar teacher (originally from Australia) who also works as a duo (with  Lizzy Templer) sometimes adding musicians to the mix to create Freepeace a standalone rock band.

Audio.Video.Disco – EP Launch Party- Staines

Audio Video Disco at Staines

Nov 15 2008      8:00P  Audio. Video. Disco. EP Launch Party     Hob Staines

So it all started when Matt and Rich played lots of acoustic guitar for a long time and eventually they got a bit bored of the acoustic circuit and decided it was time for a change.

So in came the help of Adam Linton (bass) and Tom Smith (drums) into the band. Everything seemed to fall into place very quickly and new songs were written in a flash and we hit the ground running. All we needed was the band name….so after months of rubbish ideas and even worse ideas we settled on Audio.Video.Disco. meaning “I hear, I see, I learn” in latin and as rich described it, it was the coolest thing matt has ever come up with in his life!

They have played alongside established pop act Alphabeat, played headline shows at The Fighting Cocks, sold out in their hometown and had a storming set at The Clapham Grand, things are majorly looking up. The band are set to record with engineer / producer Phil English in September and are currently preparing for their biggest gig yet……a headline slot at the London Astoria 2. It’s gonna be mad, get a ticket, don’t be the only person to miss out……

Impressive Guitar with Big Jim Sullivan, Staines

Big Jim Sullivan

Duncan McKenzie & Big Jim Sullivan at STAINES RIVERSIDE CLUB
Thu Aug 21 2008 9PM £3 on door Non-Members welcome

We saw this duo at the convivial Staines Riverside Club, Laleham Road, Staines last April. Their set was split into two, with part one being acoustic and ‘jazzy’ and the second part being electric and ‘rocky’. The jazz standards in the first half were perfect and there was plenty to be amazed at. But the second half, the rock half, was when the fire really started and the earth really began to move. The pair sound a lot like 1970’s Dire Straits but the playing fluctuates between raw blues to flamenco style – always bold – always confident- using the body of the guitar percussively, and employing some sumptuous finger-style technique.

Rosabella and her band have been making waves in jazz and songwriting circles, with the likes of Grammy winner Bob James picking up on their talent via myspace and collaborating with them on a song from Rosabella’s forthcoming debut album. Big Jim Sullivan and Duncan McKenzie

Big Jim Sullivan

Big Jim Sullivan with Duncan McKenzie

If you prefer your peanut butter smoo-ooth and you like your breezes warm and tropical – then the gentle sounds of Duncan Mckenzie and ‘Big Jim’ Sullivan are probably for you. This is music for the ’mellow birds’ set.

That is not to say that there is no drama or light n’ shade in their playing, but the sheer class and gentle power of the strings washes over the listener in a mesmeric and, frankly, spiritual way. Yes, it is musical healing.

You probably already knew that ‘Big Jim’ has worked with just about every artist in the business- from Ritchie Blackmore to Frank Zappa via Jimmy Page. He played with Elvis. He toured with Tom Jones. He practiced sitar with George Harrison in his sitting room. Heck, he was even on the fateful tour that ended Eddie Cochran’s life. But you probably were not aware of just how mighty and influential ‘Big Jim’ has been on the guitar world stage. Amongst his many, many achievements he can boast that he introduced 12-string guitars to the UK, he was the first to use fuzz-boxes and whah-whah on recordings and he even did the musical arrangements for the orchestral version of The Who’s Tommy.

Duncan McKenzie, one of the uk’s finest acoustic guitarists in his own right, provides the vocals for the duo.His ambient vocal style, gritty when required but fluid and soulful for the most part, add colour and nuance to the twin guitars.

I saw the duo at the convivial Staines Riverside Club, Laleham Road, Staines last week.

Covers include work by Van Morrison, Bob Dylan (or to be more accurate Jimi Hendrix plays Dylan), Eric Clapton, the Beatles and, naturally, Elvis. Sometimes folksy and soulful a la 1970’s Wishbone Ash, often gritty and raw, but always majestically tuneful and gloriously sumptuous.

This is guitar heaven. It is guitar cream and honey.

Go to see the ‘Bee Gees’ at Hayes

Bee Gees fever

Bee Gee Fever at the Beck Theatre, Hayes. Thu 17th April 8pm. £12-£25

Bee Gee Fever – the ULTIMATE Live TRIBUTE to the music of The Bee Gees

Since 1999 Bee Gees Fever have been wowing audiences across the UK and Europe with their stunning live tribute to the music of the Brothers Gibb.

From the soulful ballads Too Much Heaven and How Deep Is Your Love through to the high energy disco classics such as Stayin Alive and Night Fever, the band faithfully recreate the songs that have helped make the Bee Gees musical legends over the last four decades. With a full show of over 2 hours, there is something for everyone from every era of the Bee Gees glittering career, and create a striking visual tribute too as they pay tribute to the Saturday Night Fever image of the late 70s.

Unlike some tribute acts, all the songs are performed totally live, no backing tapes or sequencers, just five guys, their voices and their instruments. This gives the show a raw energy which will get even the most reserved feet up on the dance floor.

Bee Gees Fever perform to theatre and festival crowds both in the UK and in Europe and have worked with the likes of Suzi Quatro, Hot Chocolate, The Manfreds and the Foundations – plus a host of todays brightest chart stars such as Liberty X, Atomic Kitten, Gareth Gates and Busted.

They also perform regularly at the Bee Gees Fan Club’s Convention in Manchester, to an audience made up of fans from all over the world and some special guests such as Blue Weaver, the keyboard player in the Bee Gees disco era line-up and responsible for co-writing many of the 70s classics. In 2004 the band were asked to headline a festival in Emmen, Holland on a bill which also featured The Troggs and Chris Farlowe, and they have continued to play to packed audiences all over the UK.

Go to see ‘Big Jim Sullivan’ at Staines Riverside Club

Big Jim Sullivan and Duncan Mckenzie at Staines

The Big Jim Sullivan & Duncan Mckenzie, Apr 17 2008 8:30P The Riverside Club, Staines

The Big Jim Sullivan / Duncan Mckenzie

Big Jim Sullivan started playing the guitar at 14 and within 2 years was
already a professional. Richie Blackmore went to see Jim every now and
then for the odd lesson. “It wasn’t that odd” said Jim “Richie was a precocious talent even then, he learned to be an individual very quickly. To be truthful I think that telling him to be an individual and making him use his little finger is all I needed to tell him. The rest was natural to him.”

Hitting the big time at 17 as one of Marty Wildes original Wildcats. The Wildcats, including Jim, had the pleasure of meeting and backing the charismatic Eddie Cochran on his ill-fated tour of England. Jim went on to become one of the most sought after session guitarists throughout the sixties and seventies, his flexibility for every style of music meant he was always busy, averaging 3 sessions a day, playing on an enormous number of hits, (at least 1,000 chart entries).

In early 1969 Jim joined Tom Jones, touring extensively and although often in the background with the rest of the band he featured many times with special guests on Toms TV shows.

Jim left Tom late 1974 and immediately teamed up with Derek Lawrence, the producer of ‘Deep Purple‘, ‘Wishbone Ash‘ and more. Derek and Jim had a record label called ‘Retreat’. They also produced various artists over a period of two years or so. Among these artists were ‘Labi Sifri‘, ‘Chas ‘n’ Dave‘, ‘Mcguiness Flint‘, ‘Tiger‘ and more. Together they went to the states and produced a Glam Metal band called ‘Angel‘. This band was very big in America and Derek and Jim Stayed in the States and produced more artists and a second ‘Angel’ album.

Jim now tours with Duncan Mckenzie, a friend of long standing and a great artist in his own right. The duo covers music from jazz standards to Jimmy Hendrix.

A rare chance to see a true Guitar Hero here in STAINES
