With THE DAQUIRIS

Albany Down can be counted on for pleasure and honest to goodness fun. Here is what ADPONTES had to say about this great band last time they came into town:

The sound of Albany Down is stripped-down-to-the-waist no nonsense rhythm and blues 70’s inspired Brit rock ( the feel of early ‘Free‘ or ‘John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers‘) but with a bit of jazz-funk to mix it up a little…very fine and accomplished performance…insistent guitar hooks, stripped down licks and rattling good-time rock…

Classic Soul Sounds -  Live at Ascot

Soul Disciples at Ascot

Soul Disciples
Mar 21 2009
Jagz
Ascot

West London’s Soul Disciples came together late in 2005 with the express wish of bringing the classic soul sounds of the 60’s & 70’s to the dance floors of Britain.

Dismayed at the disservice these great tunes are being paid by many covers bands, we have resolved to make our interpretations as faithful to
the spirit of the originals as possible.

The soulful voice of Miss Clare “Bubbles” Moloney combined with the authentic soul sound of the SD band has to be witnessed to be believed.

The Soul Disciples constantly strive to instill their performances with the spirit and skill which made soul music of the 60’s & 70’s so exciting.

The SD’s have found themselves in the enviable position of having an 8-piece line-up which combines experience, virtuosity, personality & good looks …
All wrapped up with a shared love of Classic Motown, Atlantic, Stax & Northern Soul.

Saturday, 21st March
Show will start at 8.45
Ticket cost: £8.00
Doors open from 7.30pm. £26 for 2 courses and entrance (£30 for 3 courses). Entrance for the bands is £8 but is strictly

limited and on a first come first served basis. Entrance for dining or just the band INCLUDES free entrance to the nightclub

UK Blues Legend at Staines

Papa George at Staines Riverside Club

Jan 22 2009      8:30P  RIVERSIDE CLUB – PAPA GEORGE & STEVE SIMPSON

One of the musical highpoints of 2008 was the visit to STAINES of the legendary bluesman Papa George- to the Riverside Club.  Over 30 years Papa George has forged a reputation for stunning performances on the blues circuits and at festivals.

Recognised as one of the top blues guitarists and vocalists of our time and described by THE TIMES as “a mean axeman”, he captivates audiences playing Fender Stratocaster, or bottleneck blues-style on Amistar and National Steel guitars, with a passionate vocal style delivered with absolute conviction.

See him THIS WEEK in STAINES for less than a fiver with the sensational STEVE SIMPSON who is a musical legend in his own right!

Steve Simpson was the lead guitarist with ’Ronnie Lane’s Slim Chance’ group and general all round multi-intrumentalist taking on the part of fiddle and accordion in addition to his stunning lead guitar roles.

With FRAN & JOSH

Fran and Josh’ is the sound wave form of the term one size fits all.

They were recently the first unsigned band to play on the ‘Live Drivetime’ session on ‘XFM Manchester’ where they covered the song “Better off Alone” by Alice Deejay. They have since been invited back to play at Clint Boon’s wife’s Tea Party in November!

This troublesome doublesome of whippersnappers will soon be hitting the screens of MTV on ‘Living on The Edge’.

You will also be able to catch them on MTV’s Brand spanking new music website!

Their latest success has been an interest from 14th Floor Records in London.

Originally their music developed from a love for flamenco, admiring artists such as Paco De Lucia, Rodrigo Y Gabriela and Tommy Emmanuel. By studying their fast paced and skillfull guitaring techniques they began to teach themselves from day one.

‘Fran and Josh’ have combined flamenco with true party music. In doing this they continue to cover many genres through the use of an acoustic guitar, for example;
Hip-hop, house music, dance, trance and D’n'B.

About fiN – Extract from Staines Blog – for full review click here

The fiN song-book is replete with the kind of discordant harmonic treasures born from a day of muted pleasures out on the Bedfont Lakes. Their sounds contain a heartfelt diet of melodic instrumentation and a fullness and roundness of experimental rhythm, jarred in all the right places by periodic gusts of sheer power – broken up by sudden unexplained lulls. In fact, their music is, at  times, like that most treasured of all things – an almost perfect English summer’s day – in that it is menacingly fragile and always on the verge of predictable heartaching tragedy.

5 Things – This Week in Staines

1.

Duncan Mckenzie & Alec McCabe at Staines

Duncan McKenzie at Staines

Nov 13 2008      9:00P The Staines Riverside Club £3

Those that regularly read this column and support live music in Staines will be familiar with Duncan McKenzie the smooth acoustic and blues operator who has recently been gracing our Thameside venue with his superlative fretwork and polished repertoire of soft, yet invigorating, blues. He has worked, recently, with Mike Piggott and, ofcourse, Big Jim Sullivan. He is now back in town with Alec McCabe.

If you like your blues to be soft, luxurious and professional- this show is not to be missed.  We are very luicky to have these guys in town!

Alec McCabe is a guitar teacher (originally from Australia) who also works as a duo (with  Lizzy Templer) sometimes adding musicians to the mix to create Freepeace a standalone rock band.

Audio.Video.Disco – EP Launch Party- Staines

Audio Video Disco at Staines

Nov 15 2008      8:00P  Audio. Video. Disco. EP Launch Party     Hob Staines

So it all started when Matt and Rich played lots of acoustic guitar for a long time and eventually they got a bit bored of the acoustic circuit and decided it was time for a change.

So in came the help of Adam Linton (bass) and Tom Smith (drums) into the band. Everything seemed to fall into place very quickly and new songs were written in a flash and we hit the ground running. All we needed was the band name….so after months of rubbish ideas and even worse ideas we settled on Audio.Video.Disco. meaning “I hear, I see, I learn” in latin and as rich described it, it was the coolest thing matt has ever come up with in his life!

They have played alongside established pop act Alphabeat, played headline shows at The Fighting Cocks, sold out in their hometown and had a storming set at The Clapham Grand, things are majorly looking up. The band are set to record with engineer / producer Phil English in September and are currently preparing for their biggest gig yet……a headline slot at the London Astoria 2. It’s gonna be mad, get a ticket, don’t be the only person to miss out……
