A Dolls House

A Dolls House – the Kingston ROSE theatre  9 September – 27 September

Post performance talk: Tuesday 16 September

By Henrik Ibsen
Directed by Peter Hall

In 1879, Ibsen’s new play stunned the world and provoked outrage. One critic compared it to the ‘dropping of a bomb into contemporary life’. Beautifully crafted and powerfully moving, no work better distils Ibsen’s genius than A Doll’s House.

The cast includes Catherine McCormack (The Land Girls, All My Sons), Finbar Lynch (Proof, Not About Nightingales), Anthony Howell (Foyle’s War), Christopher Ravenscroft (The Ruth Rendell Mysteries) and Susie Trayling (National Theatre, Heartbeat).

Get Folked Up with Eleanor McEvoy

Eleanor McEvoy

Eleanor McEvoy – June 4 2008 at West End Centre, Queens Road, Aldershot 8:00P £9

In a world where the word star and the gift of talent are often devalued, Eleanor McEvoy is neither an overnight success nor a four week wonder. A musician and songwriter of note, the real deal, possessing all of the qualities that go to make up the complete artist.

Her career began at the age of four when she took piano lessons, taking up violin at the age of eight. Upon finishing school she attended Trinity College in Dublin where she studied music by day and worked in pit orchestras and music clubs by night.Eleanor graduated from Trinity and was accepted into the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland where she worked four years before finally taking the plunge to concentrate on her passion for songwriting.

After a long hard slog, the girl who spent the year of 1988 busking in Union Square, New York had come a long way, a route that took her through the disciplines of classical music, Irish traditional music and contemporary music to a point where she finally found success in 1992.

It happened when one of her songs “Only a Woman’s Heart” inspired the title for, and appeared on, the “A Woman’s Heart” anthology album. It has since gone on to become the best selling album in Irish history, staying in the Irish Top 10 for over a year.

Since then Eleanor has gone on to become an artist and performer known throughout the world. Her critically acclaimed canon of work spans six albums, several singles and appearances on numerous compilation albums and is today recognised as Ireland’s most successful female singer songwriter having enjoyed personal chart success and numerous cover versions of her songs. (Emmylou Harris, Mary Black, Phil Coulter, amongst others). Her song “All I Have” features in the most recent series of the HBO cult series “Six Feet Under”.

Great Band – Foulplay – at Ye Old Swan, Burnham

Foulplay

Fouplay- Jun 7 2008 9:00P Ye Old Swan, Burnham , Berks

The time (before last) that we saw Foul Play at the cosy and bijou ‘pubette’ that is the Jolly Farmer, Staines, the band had managed to squeeze their four-piece guitar-based band plus amps & speakers plus some keyboards with female vocalist (plus two backing singers), into a space that was just about big enough to seat a pot-plant.
(They normally keep the pot plant on the corner table by the window.)

On that night, the band kept bringing out more and more songs from their plentiful archives like some kind of deranged ‘rock school’ lecturers.

“Do you remember Little Richard? No, well here’s some. Do you remember Rockabilly? No, well here’s some. Do you remember Surf Music? No, well here’s some”….their repertoire included everything ( as in EVERYTHING) from bygone ages of old-time rock and roll and skiffle, through to classics from the glam-rock seventies, big numbers from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and even into modern indie rock territory. I was astonished when the five piece ( and mainly guitar-based combo, remember) attempted- and pulled off with some aplomb- some 2-Tone British Ska.

That was the time before last.

When we saw the band last summer they had a new lead guitar player in the shape of Pete Downes – and, boy, can he play !!!

The lead singer, Lee Ridley, (who uncannily resembles David Brent) is still the main dynamo for the group and provides some nice chunky chords for Pete Downes to ornament and adorn. But they have now ‘lost’ the keyboards. But they retain Carl Gaywood on drums and Huw Stokes on Bass.

When did you last see a band without keyboards attempt a Pink Floyd number? It is typical of these boys to attempt Pink Floyd now they DON’T have keyboards any longer! Yep! The Foul Play boys even did a track from Dark Side of the Moon… God bless ‘em.

So if you like classic rock, and you like some fancy guitar work, and you like a good old sing-song why not go on a musical journey through the entire seven ages of rock with Foul Play?

You could do lot worse than coming down the Jolly Farmer the next night the boys are playing. It could be an education.

The Bad Thing! In Staines

The Bad Thing- Staines

The Bad Thing, St Peters Staines May 24 2008

Alternative rock outfit The Bad Thing, inspired by bands such as Foo Fighters and the Buzz Cocks (albeit with a more experimental and progressive sound) used a simple lyrical structure that allowed lead singer Scatty to throw emotion at the crowd. They are a hard band to peg, with their revolving system of bass and rhythm guitar keeping the sound fresh and constantly changing. Their song “What Up World” was the definitive song of the set.

The Bad Thing (from Staines) are a tight, experienced rock n’ roll unit made possible by 5 young men with a passion for music.

Best thing about their gigs is you don’t know what you’re gonna get from ‘em till you get there, they like to play to new people, we’ve songs of good times, bad times, songs about you and songs about me, so go down and take a listen, you never know, you might be humming their tunes on the way home

They’re also playing at the Purple Turtle in Camden Town on 22nd June in BoB Round 2. Cheer them on!

Scott Freeman: Guitars, Lead Vocals, Songwriter, Keys

Sonny Evans: Lead Guitar, Backing Vox

Go see Innocent Enemies at Hobgoblin, Staines

Innocent Enemies

Innocent Enemies- The Hob, Staines, 22 May 7:30P

Innocent Enemies are a four-piece indie rock band originating from the Hounslow area.

The band formed in 2004 and with only a few original songs and a couple of well known covers began gigging in local venues. Towards the end of 2004, the band decided to focus on original material and quickly recorded their first demo at No Stairway Studios, Teddington. The demo contained live favourites Angel Eyes, Is London Listening? and Cavalier. It was through this demo that Innocent Enemies were able to secure a gig at Camden’s Purple Turtle, where they headlined the event.

In late 2006 the Innocents decided to take a break in order to focus on other projects. However, in late 2007 the band reformed with new songs, a new attitude and a clear vision of where the future will take them.

Paul Nicholas: Guitar, Vocals

Dan O’Sullivan: Bass, Vocals

John Carroll: Guitar, Backing Vocals

Gareth Powell: Drums & Purcussion
Influences The Beatles, Oasis, The Clash, U2, The Rolling Stones, Stone Roses, The Smiths, Stereophonics

Go to listen to virtuoso slide guitarist Michael Messer

Michael Messer by Alan Messer ©2004

Michael Messers Second Mind Band, Jagz Ascot, , 23rd May 8PM

Michael Messer is a virtuoso slide guitarist who has one of the best bands performing some of the greatest blues tunes produced this century. His playing encompasses the entire history of the blues but is totally individual and contemporary. His use of turntables in the band adds a new element to the music and Messer’s haunting vocals ooze authenticity and integrity. The American magazine, ‘Spirit’ listed Michael as one of the greatest slide guitarists ever alongside Duane Allman and Ry Cooder.

Michael Messer was born in Middlesex in 1956. Throughout his childhood and teens he played rock music with his two brothers and in various local bands. In his early twenties, Messer spent time in Nashville where he had the chance to meet and hear
some of the ‘greats’ of country music performing in their home environment. These included Roy Acuff, Hank Snow and Johnny Cash. Back home in England in the late seventies, Messer was mastering the art of Mississippi delta blues slide guitar, buying his first National steel guitar in 1979. He began playing blues gigs, both as a solo artist and in various local bands in the early eighties.

The 2008 band:

Michael Messer – Vocals & Slide Guitar

Ed Genis – Rhythm & Lead Guitar

Louie Genis – Turntable

Jerry Soffe – Bass Guitar

Simon Price – Drums

Occasional shows – Richard Causon – Piano
Occasional shows – Matt Round – Bass Guitar & Upright Bass

With Michael’s soulful voice & brilliant slide guita playing; featuring the unique Louie Genis ‘scratching’ with ancient blues vinyl & Ed Genis on rhythm guitar, this trio rocked its way through one & a half hours of the best & most original blues I have heard in a very long time. Highly original, totally unique & very catchy.
A brilliant concert! [What's On]

Also catch Michael Messer on Jun 14 2008 at the LONDON MUSIC SHOW, ExCeL,

May 20 2008 8:00P Beck Theatre Hayes

May 21 2008 8:00P Beck Theatre Hayes

Whatever happened to the golden age of flying? When ladies always wore heels and gents would smoke cuban cigars… and you could sit in the cockpit sipping champagne with the captain…before joining him in the mile-high club.

Now all you get is a long queue through security, a meaningless video presentation, a cheesy pasta meal you have to eat with a bendy plastic fork and a rude and rough looking ‘bird’ giving you the evil eye if you dare to ask for another pillow.

Pam Ann brings it all to you in this witty, sexy and very rude show … the highs and the lows, the good old days and the not-so-good present age of flying.

Pam has toured with Cher and Elton John and is described as ‘cruelly funny’.

Into the Woods

Into the Woods- Riverside Arts Centre, Sunbury, 14th – 17th May £8

A Musical by Stephen Sondheim

Riverside Youth Theatre
14th-17th May 2008
Riverside Arts Centre

Into the Woods is an award-winning musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. It debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986, and premiered on Broadway in 1987. Bernadette Peters’ performance as the Witch, and Joanna Gleason’s portrayal of the Baker’s Wife, brought acclaim to the production during its original Broadway run.

Inspired by Bruno Bettelheim’s 1976 book, The Uses of Enchantment, the musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales and follows them further to explore the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. The main characters are taken from the stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella, tied together by an original story involving a Baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family, and including references to several other well-known tales.

A revival at the Royal Opera House’s Linbury Studio in Covent Garden (with Clive Rowe) had a limited run from June 14 – June 30 2007. This is the second Sondheim musical to be staged by the company, following 2003′s Sweeney Todd.

Laugh with Geoff Norcott, Walton-on-Thames

Geoff Norcott at Walton

Friday 25th April 8PM – Comedy once a month at Riverhouse Barn, Walton

Described as “The first comedian of rap” by Craig Charles, Geoff is a high-energy performer whose strength is his devastatingly accurate parody of the violently misogynist attitude that pervades the rap scene.

Faithfully recreating the genre’s hateful lyrics and arrogant stance, he uses the usual weapons in the musical comedian’s armoury to drive his point home. But that message, and the accuracy of his renditions raise this well above the norm.
Away from the parodies, his more straightforward stand-up on everyday observational topics are delivered with an easy confidence and no small measure of charm.
